Improving Rail Passenger Experience with Free, Reliable Wi-Fi with Digi TransPort WR44R

It is estimated that the number of Europeans connecting to Wi-Fi on trains will grow by almost 5 times in less than 10 years due to customer demand, competition, and growth in train/commuter services (source: BWCS).

At the end of 2017, the UK Government set out an ambitious plan to benefit train passengers from a dramatically improved onboard mobile and Wi-Fi connections.

One of the main obstacles that trains were finding was that to provide a consistent, high-quality connection appears to be too high of an investment and the return on investment (ROI) just isn’t significant enough, even where there are plans to charge passengers a small fee.

Free Wi-Fi is not only just becoming a standard expectation but there are also benefits of offering free Wi-Fi to train passengers:

• It improves the passenger experience
• It allows passengers to work on the go
• It can be used to analyse passenger behaviour
• It can be used to gather passenger information for loyalty

An electrically powered interurban commuter rail line in Indiana, US was facing this dilemma, as passenger satisfaction is a priority for the company so ensuring a reliable connection as a free service was essential, without making a loss. The solution that was offered to them was Digi TransPort® WR44R – a compact, mobile-access LTD router that can provide internet access for up to 120 clients while simultaneously maintain secure priority links for onboard systems.

The Digi TransPort WR44R® is a rugged, all-in-one 4G LTE Advanced cellular solution with true enterprise class routing, security and firewall. The WR44R has a heavy-duty cast aluminium enclosure, offering a flexible interface design with an optional integrated Wi-Fi access point (with multi SSID), USB, serial and 4-port Ethernet switch, as well as a variety of configuration options including GPS and CAN support.

The Digi TransPort WR44R routers are ideal for transportation and mobile applications.

Battery Management System (BMS) Components for Electric Vehicles (EV) & Energy Storage Systems by Pulse

Over the next few years, the forecast for demand in electric vehicles (EV) is predicted to dramatically increase. The sales of electric vehicles are expected to surpass the sales of traditional internal combustion vehicles in less than 20 years. In 2017, the UK government announced that they will be banning to sale of any new petrol or diesel cars in 2040.

This means that designers and engineers need battery management systems that are designed for efficient battery capacity and increased battery lifetime. Due to this demand, Pulse Electronics Networking have developed enhanced battery management system components.

Battery Management Systems (BMS) features include:

    • Multiple options for working voltages and voltage isolation
    • Meets AEC-Q200 requirements for automotive applications
    • Operating temperatures from -40 C to 125 C

You can find out more in this video:

Automotive manufacturers are expecting an increase in demand for electric vehicles; the quality of the transformers and other components within BMS has a direct impact on the quality of the BMS itself. Components must meet strict industry standards, and be able to operate in a wide range of temperatures. Pulse Electronics have designed several components that meet strict industry standards and are able to operate in a wide range of temperatures, offering engineers multiple options for working voltage and voltage isolation. Not only are these transformers reliable and durable, Pulse Electronics ensures that they are a cost-effective choice to contribute to the improvement of safety, efficiency and longevity of electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

The Real IoT Seminar – June 2019, Redditch

Solid State Supplies are hosting the “Real” IoT Seminar (RIoT) with Robustel, Quectel and InVMA on Thursday 20th June at our HQ in Redditch.

Real IoT is an event aimed at people who are considering a move from the provision of “products” to “connected products”. This seminar will include talks from established guests from the world of IoT; come and listen to technical and commercial discussions about the salient considerations of moving to such a model – also known as the Internet of Things (IoT).

RIoT is designed to debunk the myths surrounding the transition to IoT. It is an attempt to ride the wave of disillusionment surrounding the vastly overhyped and often intangible noise around IoT, and to showcase real applications that are creating financial success.

    You should attend if you:

    • Are thinking of moving to a “connected products” business model and struggling to prove the technology and/or the business case

    • Have considered the idea of “doing IoT” but you’re unsure what that could mean for your company

    • Are just looking for examples of ideas that have been successfully implemented

    What’s in it for you?

    • Learn the clear steps towards connecting your product in a low-risk, effective and efficient way

    • Investigate the challenges of connecting your product and how to overcome them

    • Learn from presentations on previous real-world success stories

    • Gain detailed knowledge on the components that make up an IoT solution stack

Register your interest now, quoting “RIoT” in the form below.

Please note: this event has been put together to help manufacturers on their journey towards Industry 4.0, therefore, Manufacturing Professionals are given priority to register for the event before other delegates. We will contact you a few weeks prior to the event to let you know if you have been allocated a ticket.
